Strange to see Bogie in the wild west but a little gem of a film.

JAMES CAGNEY THE SINGING COWBOY!
Rezension aus Kanada am 13. Mai 2017
Not one of James Cagney's greatest films, by any means, but still enormous fun if you (a) like Westerns; (b) like watching Cagney and Bogart together with a fabulous supporting cast (including the great Ward Bond and Donald Crisp!); and (c) would like to hear Cagney sing "Rock-a-bye Baby" in Spanish! (He also sings "I Don't Want to Play in Your Yard", just as a bonus.) All about the Sooners and the Great Oklahoma Land Rush, with a very stirring scene of the settlers galloping to their new homesteads.
Bogie has a bit of a perm and the usual minor villain role so typical of his early career. It could have been filled by anyone, really; which just goes to prove that if everybody on the Warner lot hadn't turned down "High Sierra" (which finally launched him into stardom), Humphrey Bogart would only be a footnote to film history today.
Interestingly, Cagney makes a point of the fact that the Natives were paid for their land, yes --- but were also given no other choice but to sell it. As he points out, so much for the "legality" of the thing. And however much they were paid back then, the value of the land certainly exploded with the discovery of oil years later.
Incidentally, Cagney does all his own riding here, and does it well. He loved horses, having grown up in an era when they were still very evident even on the streets of New York City, where he grew up. He bought a farm after he became successful, and rode for pleasure as often as he could. It shows.
Enjoy!

Cagney & Bogie keep your attention
Rezension aus Kanada am 20. März 2019
The quality of the disc is excellent. I totally enjoyed this movie with Bogie as the bad guy (you can see some of the 'gangster' role playing here) and Cagney as the good 'outlaw'. Its a fun movie and while it was hard to imagine these two actors known for their gangster roles to play in a western and make the characters and the plot believable - but they did it. I highly recommend this movie.

Bogart on a horse!
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 19. August 2017
A real curiosity, all Warners' gangster crew 'on holiday' making a western! James Wong Howe's camerawork gives this silent serial film type story a grandeur it doesn't deserve. Cagney singing Rocker bye baby in Spanish is a choice highlight of the 'everything including the kitchen sink' clichés included. Why cagney's character is called the title role and what side of the law divide he is on, is, like much else, not expanded upon. Silly really, only missing the train crash it was at the box office.
