This horror film is a German production.
The distinguished Hermann Warm (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Passion of Joan of Arc, etc.)
was responsible for the excellent, very detailed sets of this film.
The medical laboratory looks like a haunted house on the outside,
but inside it is modern-all cold glass and metal.
The special effects are fantastic. The surgery includes a robotic assistant to the surgeon.
The severed head is seamlessly connected to a complex array of tubes, glass vessels and machines.
The artist's studio looks like the lair of a wizard, brimming with weird sculptures and bric-a-brac.
Also impressive is the design of the "Tam-Tam" dive/strip joint.
Responsible for the evocative black&white photography is the distinguished Georg Krause
(Paths of Glory, The Devil Strikes at Night, etc).
German actor Horst Frank is excellent in the role of the obsessive scientist,
who views humanity with detached fascination.
When he explains his motivation for his "un-ethical" medical experiments
he has a rant reminiscent of A. Hitler...
Both female characters are excellent in their respective roles.
Despite her misgivings and horror, the crippled nurse is very pleased
with her new body (stolen from the murdered strip dancer).
The German audio version of the film has English subtitles.
Highly recommended!
